Laura M. Carpenter, Associate Professor of Sociology, is an expert on gender, sexuality, health, and the life course. She is author of Virginity Lost: An Intimate Portrait of First Sexual Experiences (NYU Press, 2005) and coeditor of Sex for Life: From Virginity to Viagra, How Sexuality Changes Throughout our Lives (NYU Press, 2012). Her research has addressed sexual beliefs and behavior in adolescence and midlife, controversies over male circumcision and the vaccine for human papillomavirus (HPV), and depictions of sexuality and romance in popular media, and received support from the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Aging, and Social Science Research Council. An avid user and teacher of qualitative research methods, including digital storytelling and photo voice, she has recently embarked on a multimedia study of coming-of-age road trips and family stories.
