The City Walking Space Making Place
Associate Professor of Italian

A place exists only if it is told. Walking, looking, exploring, drawing, writing,
photographing, and reading are essential to understanding a city’s identity. They
immerse us in the material setting where our lives unfold like pages turning;
where we develop attachments to space—longing and belonging. It is through
traversing and telling all parts of a city that generic space turns into meaningful
place, that routes become roots, that we aspire to contribute to our city’s making
and remaking.
